Dear Echoes
The plans to build an all weather pitch on the Kirklandpark field were first presented to the Kirklandpark Primary School Parent Council at our monthly meeting on September 21st of this year. Prior to this, the plans had not been discussed with staff or parents. It has been confirmed by SLC that £110,000 of the budget for the refurbishment of Kirklandpark Primary School has been set aside for the provision of a MUGA (multi-use games area) similar to that at Wester Overton. It has also been confirmed that 'should the decision be taken to provide a 3G pitch instead, the funding allocation for the MUGA would be directed towards the alternative provision'. The council funding to be used in building this pitch was originally ring fenced for Kirklandpark Primary School.
Initially the feeling from parents of children attending Kirklandpark Primary School seemed to be positive with few reservations and therefore the Parent Council took the position of agreement in principle, pending parent forum consultation. Since that time many questions have been posed to us concerning this project, which we do not feel have been adequately addressed. We are concerned that the consultation process between SLC and the school has not progressed beyond the initial meeting.
The Parent Council have commenced on a process of fact finding before giving all parents an opportunity to express their views in a ballot in January. Given the use of funds originally intended for the exclusive benefit of the school and the huge impact this project will have on the school, it is vital that protecting the welfare and education of children attending Kirklandpark School, is at the centre of the decision to go ahead with construction of the pitch.
Yours faithfully,
Patrick Flood, Chair of Kirklandpark Parent Council
